Networks, Connections and Community: Learning with Social Software is een onderzoeksrapport, uitgegeven door het Australian Flexible Learning Framework. Via hun website kun je een samenvatting plus het integrale rapport downloaden (meer dan 100 pagina’s; ongeveer de helft bestaat uit bijlagen).
The research investigates the use of social software in teaching and learning and in capability building and contributes to our understanding of the ways in which the development of social softwares broadens opportunities for organisations to deliver flexible learning both to internal and external clients.
Het rapport probeert drie ontwikkelingen te integreren. In de eerste plaats de nieuwe generatie lerenden en werkenden (zeg maar de net-generation). Op de tweede plaats nieuwe inzichten in de manier waarop kennis wordt ontwikkeld (met name Siemens’ connectivisme). En op de derde plaats nieuwe technologieën (social software).
Het rapport focust met name op het (middelbaar) beroepsonderwijs. De onderzoekers zien veel potentieel voor de toepassing van social software binnen deze tak van onderwijs maar geven tegelijkertijd aan dat dezetoepassing nog in de kinderschoenen staat. Een belangrijke conclusie gericht op de acceptatie van social software binnen het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs is:
The critical elements for the successful use of social software for knowledge sharing and capability development that emerged include having a real need to use it (authenticity); its use being relevant to the need and appropriate for the client; and being supported within an enabling culture. For those organisations wanting to further the uptake of social software, strategies such as modelling, just-in-time mentoring, work-based learning strategies such as LearnScope, and immersion, ie using it in everyday work, are highly favoured.
Het rapport bevat trouwens handige samenvattingen van concepten. Onderzoekstechnisch gezien vind ik het rapport minder sterk (o.a. een online enquête met 74 respondenten; die scoren waarschijnlijk altijd wat positiever als het gaat om social software).
