Volgens Will Richardson heeft een minderheid van Amerikaanse scholen beleid op het gebied van social networking (zoals MySpace, YouTube of Hyves). De meeste scholen, die een beleid hebben, blokkeren toegang tot deze sites. Zij hebben geen (flut)wetgeving nodig. Richardson bekritiseert dit en stelt zelfs
MySpace and Facebook should be in the curriculum to facilitate the conversation about everything that could go wrong. But what about to talk about everything that could go right? What about teaching them how to use social networking sites to connect to potential teachers, to publish their ideas, share content? What about making sure that they know how to leverage what MySpace offers?
The problem is that most educators still don’t “get” what these sites represent.
Ik weet niet of ik zo ver zou willen gaan. Het lijkt me wel belangrijk dat jongeren hoe leren hoe zij om moeten gaan met Internet en social networking. Ook vind ik dat docenten na moeten denken over hoe zij social software (en dus social networking) kunnen gebruiken ten behoeve van het leren. Maar ik word ongemakkelijk bij het idee om het voor te schrijven.
