Shaken, not stirred

Ok, laatste blogbijdrage over de SURF-JISC e-portfolio bijeenkomst in Nottingham.
De laatste avond had ik met een aantal Nederlandse collega’s een discussie over de vraag hoe James Bond zijn martini’s dronk. "Shaken, not stirred" of "Stirred, not shaken".

De laatste bereidingswijze is gebruikelijk. Maar volgens mij dronk Bond, James Bond zijn favoriete drank toch echt niet geroerd. Ik kon het vanavond niet laten om Google er op los te laten.

De combinatie "shaken, not stirred" "James Bond" leverde 146 duizend hits op, terwijl "stirred, not shaken" "James Bond" het moest doen met 851 hits.

The reason the debonair Bond wants his martini shaken is that he is an iconoclast. He’s not drinking a martini at all! He’s drinking a vodka martini. There’s a difference, as we shall see. Pay close attention–we will not use the terms interchangeably but it’s easy to get confused.

Vodka martini: shaken, not stirred is the famous, or perhaps cliché, drink preference of movie spy James Bond, agent 007, first uttered by actor Sean Connery in the film Goldfinger (1962). The order has become a catch phrase in Western popular culture, and real-life martini bars often dub a martini made "shaken, not stirred" as a Martini James Bond.

The Bond of Ian Fleming’s novels prefers vodka, but also drinks gin martinis, and in his first adventure novel, Casino Royale (1953), he orders a martini that includes both types of liquor. Bond’s recipe is specified in more detail as made with three measures of gin (Gordon’s was Bond’s preference), one measure of vodka (Russian or Polish is preferred), and half a measure of Kina Lillet aperitif, shaken until ice-cold, and with a large, thin slice of lemon peel for garnish. This combination was specifically dubbed a Vesper after Bond’s love interest in the book, Vesper Lynd.
